More Evacuations May Be Necessary

Brian Teepell/USPA 24 News - The Lake George wildfire remains out of control. This morning, a helicopter is undertaking an aerial survey to gauge the fire's exact size, which was provisionally estimated at 300 hectares last night.

Further evacuations may be necessary. The Department of Emergency Management is collaborating with the local fire department on structure protection. Notification of updated shelter information for evacuees of the Lake George wildfire: Louis Millett Community Complex, located at 9489 Commercial Street, New Minas, is now operating a 24/7 shelter with overnight accommodations. As of 0815 on September 30th, residents in the southwest end of Aylesford Lake, including Birch Lane, Spruce Drive, and Blue Lane, are advised to be prepared for further evacuation orders at short notice due to the ongoing Lake George wildfire. An official Evacuation Order will be issued if evacuation becomes necessary. Authorities advise residents to ensure they have pets, essential documents, necessary medications, food, and emergency supplies ready to take at a moment's notice. Residents should remain vigilant and be prepared to leave immediately if conditions deteriorate or an Evacuation Order is issued. Continue to monitor local news and official updates, and follow all instructions from emergency authorities. If you feel unsafe at any time, evacuate the area without delay.
At first light, 23 Department of Natural Resources personnel and 20 local firefighters were deployed onsite. Water is being dropped by four NWT planes, one DNR plane, and two contracted helicopters, with four additional Quebec planes anticipated to join efforts later this morning. As of 0900, four Northwest Territories water bombers and a bird dog aircraft have commenced operations from CFB Greenwood, actively responding to the Lake George wildfire.
